The Solution
J's Story
Difficulties include:
- Visual & auditory processing
- Auditory memory
- Receptive language (e.g., understanding instructions)
- Expressive language (e.g., vocabulary, word recall)
- Social communication (e.g. identifying emotions, inferencing)
The treatment challenge:
- The need for materials appropriate for his chronological age & life experiences
- Shows resistance to therapy
- Lacks confidence and avoids overly challenging tasks due to fear of failure
- Shows a preference for screen-based activities
- Limited funding resulted in minimal time with SLT
- Has a TA, but limited time for preparing materials
- Limited parental involvement in therapy support
Over the last year, he has received a combination of face-to-face and online sessions. Cognishine was used to focus on the following areas:
The ‘what happened’ activity was adopted. After viewing an image or video, J was asked questions such as ‘what can you see?’, ‘how are the characters feeling?’ and ‘what might happen next?’. This allowed J to explore a range of different scenarios to develop his ability to infer and predict what might happen. The wealth of material allowed us to work on real-life scenarios that J may be currently experiencing and experience in the future.
J was taught strategies to support his memory and recall skills (e.g., mind-map, and rehearsing information). Therapy focused on developing his ability to use these strategies by asking him to describe a picture from the ‘recall’ activity’ and then answer relevant questions once the image was out of view.
Numerous activities were adopted to focus on J’s ability to categorise items, including animals, transport, and food.
Develop a rapport with the therapist and encourage engagement.
To finish our online sessions, we usually play a game, such us ‘memory pairs’ game, or ‘zoom out’. The games strengthen J’s bond with the therapist and are a fun reward. They also help develop pragmatic skills, such as turn-taking.
